Geography Professor Steve Manson's research couldn't come at a better time. The earth's surface is changing, and fast. By using a technique called agent-based modeling, Manson examines the rate at which humans are altering the surface of our planet. His work is meant to give us a better understanding of the footprint we leave and show us how we may be able to curb the negative effects we have on our world. Manson and his students recreate landscapes by gathering information on specific regions and the people who inhabit them. This way he can feed the data into computer programs and see patterns that may develop in the future if people don't change their habits and way of life. Manson hopes that his research will avert potentially disastrous changes in our climate. It's research that can benefit us all.
